California DMV Digital Signature Verification
This service allows businesses to instantly verify the authenticity of California driver's licenses and state IDs by cryptographically validating the digital signature embedded in the PDF417 barcode on the back of the document.
California DL/ID documents contain a Verifiable Credential (VC) encoded in the ZCE field of the PDF417 barcode on the back of the document (highlighted below), using the CBOR-LD format and signed with an ECDSA-P256 key.
This service performs two independent checks:
- Cryptographic check — verifies that the digital signature in the ZCE field is authentic and has not been tampered with.
- Revocation check — queries the California DMV status list to confirm the document has not been revoked.
This service is valuable for any organization that accepts California driver's licenses or state IDs as proof of identity and needs to detect forged or revoked documents in real time.
